Our 2009 Cover Contest has its first winner!
In the category "Best Non-Scientific Image", the jury found much praise for the portrait of a red-eyed Tree Frog (Agalychnis callidryas) on a Heliconia flower, photographed in Costa Rica in March 2008. The first prize goes to Graeme Guy of the Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology in the A-Star-funded Biopolis complex in Singapore. Graeme Guy has been submitting cover suggestions to The EMBO Journal for many years already, but this is the first time one of his images actually won our contest, against the tough competition of more than 700 submitted images. A web gallery of some of the photographer's other pictures can be found at www.grguy.net.
The editors and the jury will announce the winner in the category "Best Scientific Image" on the cover of the next issue of The EMBO Journal, on 18 March 2009. A small selection of other images that were shortlisted and received a honourable mention by the jury will be published on covers later during the year. Thank you very much to all participants for making this year's contest such an enjoyable experience for everyone.
