Visualization of the developing arterial, venous and lymphatic vessels in a midgestation mouse embryo using ultramicroscopy. Ultramicroscopy produces optical sections of clear, immunostained wholemount preparations by illumination with a thin sheet of light. Please see the article by Hägerling et al. (and the accompanying Have You Seen?) in this issue of The EMBO Journal for further details.
For this cover image, consecutive layers of the specimen were arranged in horizontal rows to create an autostereogram that can be viewed in "wall-eyed" or "cross-eyed" mode. A larger version of the cover image for on-screen viewing can be downloaded from http://www.nature.com/emboj/journal/v32/n5/extref/emboj2012340s6.bmp
