This month's cover highlights the article Liver protects neuron viability and electrocortical activity in post-cardiac arrest brain injury by Zhiyong Guo, Qiang Zhao, Xiaoshun He and colleagues. The image features a bonsai with a liver-shaped base, symbolizing the states of ischemic and non-ischemic liver. The left side of the base is dry, representing liver ischemia, with unhealthy lotus leaves symbolizing more severe brain injury. The right side is nourished by water, with healthier lotus leaves, representing reduced brain damage with liver function support. The study shows that the addition of a functioning liver to the brain normothermic machine perfusion circuit significantly reduced post-cardiac arrest brain injury, increased neuronal viability, and improved electrocortical activity.
