Transparent Peer Review Authors can choose to publish the referee reports, editorial correspondence and decision letters alongside their paper – and more than 95% of our authors do. Our editors will respect the exclusion of specific referees from peer review and there are no confidential reviewer comments, meaning authors and readers can see exactly what our editors use to make their decisions. Referees are invited to comment on each other's reports before the editor makes a decision, ensuring a balanced review process. Where this benefits the decision process, referee reports are shared with authors prior to an editorial decision for comments on the referee reports.
Reproducible Open Data We encourage authors to include the source data (minimally processed experimental results underlying the figures) alongside the figures or on a platform such as BioStudies, Figshare, Dryad or Zenodo. Publishing searchable source data with figures makes it easier for results to be used and reproduced by other scientists. All figures are curated to render the data discoverable by SourceData search technology.
Low Friction Submission The journals accept manuscripts and figures in any format or file type at initial submission. No word count restrictions, nor limits on the number of references or length of the materials and methods section. Use your ORCID identifier to simplify submission, or supply an email address and institutional affiliation for the corresponding author. Editorial decisions are usually returned within a week and referee comments within a month.
Portable Manuscripts We offer seamless transfer of manuscripts between the EMBO press journals after editorial preconsultation to afford authors concrete additional publication options. EMBO Press journals consider, where possible, referee reports from other journals and EMBO Press referee reports can be transfered to other journals or posted on preprints.
Scooping Protection Similar findings that are published by others during review or revision are not a criterion for rejection. If a manuscript is posted on a recognized preprint server, EMBO Press extends this scooping protection to the preprint (if the manuscript is submitted within four months). In exceptional circumstances, editors may consider manuscripts that have just been scooped.
